Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has admitted he would love to see his old club sign Ilkay Gundogan after Barcelona were prepare to let him leave on a free transfer.

The Red Devils are keen to bring in another midfielder before the summer window closes and are in advanced talks with Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who is set to cost the club £51m to sign.

Scholes believes United need a clever player who can control the tempo of a game and Gundogan is the right man for the job.

“Gundogan, I don’t know what’s going to happen but I think he’s the type of player that Manchester United need,”. Scholes told The Overlap alongside Jamie Carragher.

“With Zubimendi… or I would say Gundoan. A midfielder who can control the tempo of the game to reduce the pressure of the game, Gundoan fits that position.”

“I haven’t seen Ugarte much, I saw him two or three times last year. I’m not sure if he’s good enough. He looks a bit like Amrabat, maybe a little bit better.”

Gundogan is expect to reunite with Pep Guardiola at Promotion Ufabet Manchester City on a one-year deal with the option to extend for a further year.
